38 Rovers descended onto Cooran Hill at Lake Dumbleyung on Friday night for Lake Dum Moot, held on the banks of Lake Dumbleyung, 3 hours south east of Perth, and home to Ella. The weekend was organised by 1 st Riverton Rover Crew, and featured 3 “special” guests – Akiko, Shinpei and their leader Hideo from Kobe in Japan!
Complete with a disco tent, movie screen, mirror ball, kitchens, spectaular views, accommodation tents, porta loos and plenty of mosquitoes, the Hill reflected the way Rovers always do things – big!
On Saturday morning, everyone headed into Dumbleyung town to live up to the Rover motto of Service – pitching in at Dumbleyung Hospital with some grounds-keeping and window cleaning, at the Dumbleyung Tennis Club with some fence fixing and mowing and at Dumbleyung Primary School for rock-picking and the completion of paths and planting of trees through the Landcare Garden. The Rovers worked hard, and the tasks were completed in time for the AFL Grand Final… up on the hill on the big screen of course!
Those who weren’t into football, were kept well entertained on the Hill with beading and our crazy new sport – watermelon skiing, involving black plastic, water, detergent and of course, watermelons! But 9 of the Rovers were even more adventurous and headed to the Kukerin Pistol Club to “have a shot” at shooting. John Cook and his assistant had set up a series of targets, and talked the participants, many who had never used a gun before, through 4 different types of guns. It was a fabulous experience, and made even better for the Japanese by spotting their first wild kangaroos on the way home.
On Sunday, all the Rovers piled onto a bus in Dumbleyung and headed off for a wheatbelt tour. Making balloon animals along the way, lunch stop was in Kulin and a visit to the Tin Horse Highway. Our aim for the day was Wave Rock, and so complete with a giant purple balloon, bocce and a few Hawaiian shirts the Rovers scurried around Wave Rock, enjoying the view and taking many photos. An ice-cream stop in Lake Grace before the Rovers then convereged on the Dumbleyung Yacht Club to join in with the Sailing Regatta that was on the same weekend.
It was a marvellous evening – making balloon animals for the local children, whip cracking, dancing to the band and enjoying local lamb for dinner. Akiko, one of the Japanese Rovers, made the night even more special for some of the Dumbleyung Cub Scouts at the lake, presenting them each with a Japanese Scout badge.
Monday was time to pack up camp, and for the remaining Rovers to visit the All Ages Playground in Katanning.
1 st Riverton Rover Crew and the West Australian Rover Council would like to thank the community of Dumbleyung for their assistance and support with the annual state Moot.
